essc had it's first ever unofficial outing.

it took place on new years day, Y2K9 in east hampton, new york.
members representing were matt lyons and aaron ritz.

air and water temps were both cold as hell. something like 21 air and 40 water. and the waves weren't too good either. was quite enjoyable though.

it's considered the first outing simply because there were two members present, holy shit.

the part of this story that was left out before is what happened before we even got in the water.
we thought we'd try a different beach instead of the one in front of the house where we were staying, which had a steep drop into the water causing pretty close breaking waves and getting worse as the tide was coming in.
so we heading east toward montauk.
the first turnoff we saw, we took. it was a state park with a beach access road.
normally we would have seen what this road was like but because of the snow and wind, the road took on a deceiving appearance. it looked solid and inviting.
the snow covered over the deep, deep ruts that were there. plus, the fact that the road was sand, something my car can't really handle.
so, about thirty feet from the parking lot we got stuck pretty good.
just tires spinning. we could now see that the road was nothing but soft sand.
the more we tried to get out the deeper the ruts got.
we decided to call AAA as we knew there was nothing we could do.
we waited 2 hours for them.
when they arrived they informed me it was considered a rescue instead of a simple tow which was gonna cost $250. our rescuer told us as soon as we left the main road and got on a beach access road we were fucked. so he drug us out and politely escorted us to an atm.
we decided to just go surf in front of the house, something we should have done in the first place.
i was reminded of something i already knew, don't drive on roads your car can't handle.
it was a memorable way to start the new year. a costly, but memorable one.
